The Ministry of Public Works says that it is spending US$1.9 billion on road construction, repairs and rebuilding on the country's main roads and highways. In the north, Minister Victor Diaz Rua told reporters that the Ministry of Public Works was spending US$117 million on the Santiago Beltway, part of the Viadom Project. The Beltway will be 24 kilometers long with 18 overpasses and underpasses. The project also includes the repair of the Duarte Highway between Santo Domingo and Santiago and Navarrete, which has already begun. Another part of the project in the north is the widening of the highway between Navarrete and Puerto Plata.
Other roads getting fixed include the route linking Casabito and Constanza, the Coral Expressway, the La Romana Beltway and the Higuey Beltway. These last projects will reduce travel time between the Bavaro/Punta Cana area and the country's major population centers. Also included is the National Asphalt Plan which will cost US$500 million and which, according to Diaz Rua, is about half-finished. The Duarte Corridor is included in the spending program. This corridor includes overpasses and tunnels along John F. Kennedy and Ortega y Gasset and 27 de Febrero avenues in Santo Domingo. In the northeast, the program will extend the Juan Pablo II Expressway, adding 124 kilometers from Nagua all the way around the Samana Peninsula.
