The Coca Cola Company is investing US$9.5 million to produce mango juice in Haiti. John Murphy, president of Coca Cola's Latin Center Business Unit said it is a corporate social responsibility initiative. The company now employs 800 people in Haiti, the largest single private employer. He said the idea got its start in September and that USAID is also involved. The project will last five years and international organizations and community leaders in Haiti are taking part, including the UN, IDB and Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Murphy believes that this will make a positive contribution to Haiti. He said that they would be using the Madame Francine mango variety that is very juicy, sweet and less stringy, as reported in Hoy.
The project was announced in March of this year by Coca-Cola Company as the Haiti Hope Project. It brings together a coalition of business, government and civil society partners to create opportunity for 25,000 Haitian mango farmers and their families by supporting the development of a sustainable mango juice industry in the country. The project seeks to double the income of these farmers and to raise their standard of living, while contributing to the long-term development and revitalization of Haiti.
