Regional free trade zone executives will be at the Paradisus Palma Real in Punta Cana from 27-29 October to discuss regional business, markets, competitiveness actions, new sales opportunities and corporate social responsibility actions. "We are going to unfold a portrait of the operational realities of free zones in Latin America, presented by businesspeople and government policymakers in those nations", said Luis Manuel Pellerano, of the board of directors of the Dominican Association of Free Zones (Adozona). Opportunities under the free trade agreements, training of operators and case studies of countries that have been successful in several areas of manufacturing, such as India, will be studied, Pellerano told Listin Diario. This key regional event was first held in the DR 15 years ago.
Jose Torres, executive vice president of Adozona said that competition from China has affected local exports, but nevertheless, free zone exports still make up 70% of all exports to Europe and the USA and 42% of formal exports to Haiti. He said that there were 53 free zone parks, with 553 companies in operation. Production has diversified in recent years.
