Hundreds of victims of the flooding caused by the opening of the Tavera Dam floodgates during Tropical Storm Olga have marched on the local office of the National Housing Institute (INVI) in Santiago de los Caballeros. They are calling for the construction of 315 houses that were promised after the floodwaters washed away their homes in Bella Vista, Baracoa, Rafey and La Otra Banda in the lower part of the city where the worst damage was reported, according to Diario Libre. The INVI had promised to build 827 housing units but has only completed 512 apartments since the 2007 storms. The promised housing is supposed to go up in Villa Progreso, but so far the INVI has not started construction. The protesters told reporters that they were living in rented quarters and that they could no longer afford to keep paying. "The government has forgotten about us", said Maria Jimenez, one of the leaders of the demonstration. After the authorities opened the floodgates, the wall of water that engulfed the lower part of the city killed 34 people.
