A clutch homerun in the eighth inning by Dominican Juan Uribe sent the San Francisco Giants to their first World Series since 2002. The Giants will host the Texas Rangers in a best-of-seven series on Tuesday.
The Texas Rangers disposed of the reigning world champion New York Yankees on Friday, with Dominican Vladimir Guerrero providing the most telling blow to open up the game, hitting a two-out two-run double off of Phil Hughes, and then a gimpy Nelson Cruz, playing with a tender hamstring muscle, drove the stake into the Yankee's heart with his fifth homerun deep into the stands. The third Dominican on the Texas roster, closer Neftali Feliz, just 22, is throwing 97 mile an hour fastballs and he struck out Alex Rodriguez with what one reporter called "a wicked slider".
The Giants have not won a World Series since 1954, remembered for the famous catch, sure to be replayed many times this week, by Willie Mays on a deep fly to center field by Dick Wertz, if memory serves. The Texas Rangers, in the 50-year history of the franchise, have never been to a World Series.
One curious piece of data: Texas catcher Bengie Molina came over to the American League in a trade in early July, and, by a quirk in the rules, is eligible for a World Series ring, no matter who wins! Of course it will feel better if it his new club, the Texas Rangers.
