The Dominican Winter League got under way on Friday night with games in San Francisco de Macoris, Santo Domingo and San Pedro de Macoris. This year's tournament is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Rio Verde Tragedy and to former major leaguer, Jose Lima. Lima passed away this summer after a heart attack. The Rio Verde tragedy occurred on 11 January 1948 when the plane carrying almost the entire baseball team from Santiago crashed, killing all on board. Only Enrique Lantigua (El Mariscal), who failed to make the flight from Barahona to Santiago, survived.
In the first night's games, the Giants defeated the Aguilas, the Toros defeated the Estrellas and the Leones defeated the Tigres. On Saturday, Licey travelled to Santiago where they beat the Aguilas 7-1, with great pitching by Jorge Sosa and a three-run homerun by Yamaico Navarro. In the venerable Quisqueya Stadium in Santo Domingo, the Estrellas Orientales defeated the Leones de Escogido 4-2, behind good pitching from Radhames Liz, Jailen Peguero, Francisco Rosario, Franquelis Osoria and Zack Segovia. Over in La Romana, the Toros defeated the Gigantes 4-3, in a game that was decided by a homerun by Andy Dirks.
Yesterday, the Toros took first place all to themselves, defeating the Estrellas 10-3 in La Romana. A bases clearing triple by Victor Mercedes broke open the tie game in the fifth inning. The Estrellas has opened a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, and the Toros tied the game in the second inning. In Santo Domingo, Yunesky Maya pitched the same way he did during six seasons in Cuba: Very well. He worked five innings, struck out eight and allowed three hits as the Leones de Escogido shut out the Tigres de Licey 7-0. In Santiago, the Aguilas Cibaenas won their first game of the young season, coming from behind to defeat the Gigantes del Cibao 6-3. A three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning sealed the victory.
Except for the inaugural games, the near-total absence of fans was notable in all of the photographs of the weekend's games.
