Press reports that the Dominican armed forces in Dajabon stopped the crossing of thousands of Haitians who take part in the Monday market day. This has created tension at the border. UN Minustah forces on the Haitian side had to use tear gas to suppress protests at the cancellation of the market day. The main complaint was that there had not been coordination to announce the suspension ahead of time, as reported in Listin Diario.
Health Minister Bautista Rojas ordered the cancellation of market day to prevent the entrance of cholera to the country. The bi-national market turns over millions of pesos every Monday and Friday. Diario Libre reports that despite the prohibition, Haitians were able to get through by crossing the Masacre River.
Only people with visas were allowed to cross the border.
