The investigation into the death of 31-year old prosecutor Giselle Odaliza Reyes revealed that her bodyguard, police sergeant Augusto Luciano Familia is the main suspect, as reported in El Caribe. Investigators said that Familia was incoherent in his responses to questioning.
The pair had gone out to buy pizzas and the officer returned alone to the house asking if Reyes had arrived, and then went out again. He later said two people had fired at the prosecutor.
The commission also learned that the 13 bullet casings recovered at the crime scene had come from the officer's gun, as did the bullet that killed the woman. They ruled out any third party involvement and dismissed the sergeant's claim that she was the victim of an attempted robbery. The investigation concluded that Familia had killed Reyes Diaz for unknown reasons.
Reyes was shot dead on Sunday evening near her residence in Eugenio Maria de Hostos neighborhood in Santo Domingo East when she was returning home with pizzas for her children accompanied by the sergeant. The investigation revealed that the pair had been having a relationship for about eight months. Both worked in the department of investigation of sexual crimes of the National District Prosecutor Office. Reyes had worked at the department since March when she was transferred from the prosecutor office in Monte Plata at her request. The sergeant, who had been in the police for 13 years, had a clean record, according to police spokesmen.
The investigation was led by National District prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso Segarra and Perfecto Acosta, prosecutor for the Province of Santo Domingo, as well as by generals Hector Garcia Cuevas and Ramon Ciriaco Nunez.
