President Leonel Fernandez attended yesterday's opening ceremony of the 17th Florida Caribbean Cruise Association Conference (FCCA) in Santo Domingo. The venues are the Hotel Jaragua, Hotel Melia and the Sans Souci Terminal and Convention Center. Speaking at the event, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia stressed that maritime tourism was a growing segment for the country and described it as "an industry with extraordinary potential for development". This year some 400 cruise ships are scheduled to make stops at the three Dominican ports n Santo Domingo, La Romana and Samana. The event is being sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, and by Sans Souci Ports, operator of the Port of Santo Domingo. Deputy Tourism Minister Magaly Toribio forecast an 8% growth in maritime travel for this year, as reported in Listin Diario.
Luis Emilio Rodriguez, of La Romana-Casa de Campo Port, stressed that the importance of the event for Dominican tourism is in who has come. "To have all these top executives here on a one-to-one basis is priceless," he said. The event runs 25-29 October.
