Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa says that the government does not plan to increase the number of goods and services that are subject to the ITBIS value-added tax. As reported in Listin Diario, Bengoa stated that most of the products remaining are essential food basket items. Research that considered increasing taxation dated September has been circulating. Bengoa was emphatic on the issue of removing tax exemptions from these articles. "That is not on the government agenda," he told the newspaper. The research, which focused on the Dominican tax system, was discussed during the OECD-LAC forum on taxation in Guatemala, which took place in September. The Minister said that the government would not increase taxation during the government's current term of office, which ends in 2012.
