The National Sugar Union (Unazucar) has expressed its approval of the contract between the CEA (the State Sugar Council) and the Vicini-Campollo consortium. The contract involves lands that used to be cultivated by the Quisqueya and Consuelo sugar mills in the old days when the CEA managed 14 sugar mills that used to belong to dictator Rafael Trujillo. The lands have fallen into disuse lately and the Vicini-Campollo consortium will be renting 300,000 'tareas', equal to 28,900 hectares or 50,000 acres. This means new employment and business opportunities for thousands of workers and traders in the area.
El Nuevo Diario reports that the Vicini-Campollo team committed to annual payments of US$2.4 million to the government agency for the use of the lands as well as investments of US$150 million in new projects that will provide employment for 7,000 families in the San Pedro de Macoris area.
Unazucar head Cesar Heredia praised the union between the Vicini Group, with its century-old experience in the sugar industry and the Campollo Group, from Guatemala, which has many years of experience in Guatemala as well as in its handling of the Barahona Sugar Mill, taking it to new records of production.
