The Dominican Republic has maintained its ranking as a country with among the highest perceived levels of corruption in the world. Of the 178 countries on the list published by Transparency International, the Dominican Republic occupies the 101st position, and of the 23 countries in the Americas, it is listed at number 14. For years it has maintained a 3/10 rating for the widespread perception that there is a high level of corruption in the country. El Nuevo Diario reports that in Latin America only Haiti, Venezuela and Paraguay are ranked below the DR.
Civic group Citizen Participation commented that while the DR's relative position has improved, it was not due to any internal improvements, but rather to the deteriorating situations in places like Venezuela and Paraguay. Miriam Diaz Santana, Santiago Sosa, Javier Cabreja, Semil Ahami Isa and Candido Mercedes from Citizen Participation provided the information from Transparency International's latest report, released earlier this week.
