The crisis affecting the school breakfast program as a result of a series of food poisoning cases among students has made the Minister of Education mull the option of transferring responsibility to the Solidarity Program or to a consortium of companies.
Education Minister Melanio Paredes says that he had been considering the alternatives ever since he took over the ministry. There have been scandals because of lack of nutrients in the milk and food poisoning cases.
Meanwhile, more than 200,000 students in rural areas are not receiving the school breakfast that Ladom serves because the dairy company ran out of the one-pint Tetrabrik containers that it uses to package the milk.
Education Minister Melanio Paredes aired the idea of switching responsibility for the school breakfast program, a RD$17 million a day program (RD$3.6 billion a year), to media directors during a meeting held yesterday.
According to Diario Libre, the minister said that the Solidarity Program reaches around 180,000 families, while the school breakfast program benefits between 600,000 and 610,000 families and some 1.5 million students.
