According to Hoy newspaper, the bullet that killed prosecutor Giselle Reyes was a ricochet. She was not shot directly. The newspaper says that the information had come from a source inside the National Institute for Forensic Science who said that the bullet ricocheted into the seventh rib and then injured the lungs before cutting the aorta.
The main suspect in Reyes' murder is her bodyguard, police sergeant major Augusto Luciano Familia, who was sent to jail for three months in the police special operations jail in Manoguayabo as the case is prepared for court. Familia worked in the Department of Sex Crimes at the District Attorney's office in the National District. Reyes Diaz was killed by a shot to the back outside her house in the Eugenio Maria de Hostos residential project, near the Charles de Gaulle Avenue in Santo Domingo East.
The sergeant maintains his innocence. He said the victim had confessed she feared for her life. Recently, Senator Wilton Guerrero denounced that Monte Plata, where Reyes Diaz had been based, was the "latrine of the state prosecutors."
He is claiming that she was killed when he confronted two supposed criminals who attempted to rob her. Investigators recovered 13 bullet casings from the crime scene, all from the officer's gun. When questioned, Familia admitted he had been in a romantic relationship with Reyes Diaz, a 33-year old mother of four.
