The police have announced that 829 of the 2,373 people who were detained have been sent to jail for further investigation because they "had pending issues with the Justice Department". During the 18 days since the issue of the Presidential decrees that limited the sale of liquor, increased police presence on the streets and included military elements for foot patrols, there has been a decrease in criminal activity, according to a police press release. The Chief of Police, Bernardo Santana Paez, said that of the 2,373 people detained, some 500 have been cleared, 829 were sent to jail because of pending issues, and the rest are still under investigation. According to El Caribe, the police have carried out 2,400 car searches, and 71 vehicles have been seized for lack of proper documentation. The report also lists the weapons, motorcycles and drugs caught up in the sweeps.
