President Alvaro Colom visits

President Leonel Fernandez hosted his Guatemalan counterpart Alvaro Colom at the Presidential Palace yesterday. Colom was in Santo Domingo to lobby for Guatemala to be included in a new Pacific cruise route during the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association conference being held in Santo Domingo through 29 October. The two leaders discussed regional security, climate change and cholera in Haiti. They also tackled the trade conflict where Central American manufacturers are protesting about tariffs charged on imports from Central America. Dominican manufacturers argue that exporters are dumping their produce on the DR market. President Colom said that trade relations between both countries are good and he expects them to be expanded. He called for more solidarity with Haiti.
