The National Hotel and Tourism Association (Asonahores) has called on the government to establish stronger preventive health measures along the border with Haiti to prevent people with cholera from crossing into Dominican territory. He said there had been no known cancellations of travel plans by tourists to the DR in response to the current cholera outbreak in Haiti.
The US Center for Disease Control says that most travelers are not at risk of getting cholera, but that anyone traveling to Haiti should still take steps to prevent getting sick.
Asonahores president Julio Llibre said that the measures were urgently needed because cholera outbreak this side of the island would be harmful to the industry. He denied rumors that some flights to the DR had been suspended because of the outbreak in Haiti, as reported in 7dias.com.do
Llibre, nevertheless, was critical of government efforts to prevent the entry of cholera. "We believe that stronger measures need to be taken because what is at risk is the leading sector of the economy," he said.
Llibre was interviewed after an Asonahores Board meeting with opposition party leader Miguel Vargas Maldonado. Vargas Maldonado spoke in favor of the implementation of coherent public policies that end what he described as "improvisations" in the tourism sector, as reported in Diario Libre. He also called for urgently improving conditions in the areas surrounding hotels, reviewing the taxation imposed on the sector, improving electricity services, because these areas are affecting the competitiveness of Dominican hotels.
