The Minister of Public Health says that sanitary controls are being extended to tourism areas in the east and north of the DR where large numbers of Haitians work and commute back to Haiti. The local authorities are concentrating on preventive measures to control water and food products that could transmit the bacteria, and the entry of people from Haiti with the disease. The authorities report that border controls have been stepped up to prevent the entry of foreigners after the outbreak in Haiti.
Diario Libre writes that more than 600 undocumented Haitians who had entered Dominican territory in the past five days were detained and deported. The authorities are only allowing the entry of people with visas.
Meanwhile, Claire-Lise Chaignat of the World Health Organization announced that efforts are under way in Haiti to prevent the spread of the disease to the refugee camps in Haiti, where 1.3 million people live. WHO stats show that the death toll stands at around 292 and 4,147 people have been infected.
The DR's National Institute of Potable Water and Sewers (INAPA) has increased chlorine supplies to aqueducts. The Dominican government has also sent truckloads of chlorine supplies to Haiti. Other measures include medical check-ups at the border. Diario Libre reports that so far, doctors have not seen any suspected cholera cases at the border crossing.
