Dominican and Haitian authorities met yesterday and agreed to suspend market days in the DR until a new site is prepared. Renord Joseph, governor of Fort Liberte, Jean Batiste Bien Aime, Haitian consul in Dajabon and a representative of Ouanaminthe city council met with traders, as reported in Listin Diario. Dajabon governor Esther Ramirez, mayor Miguel Tatis, Customs administrator Elvio Bejaran and public health director Rafael Salas Ubiera represented the Dominican side. Mayor Tatis said that the Haitian authorities wanted to consult with their superiors in Port-au-Prince on the possibility of equipping an area outside the site currently used for the market day before reopening the market. He said that in any case, work on the new market area in Dajabon is advancing.
Listin Diario reports that security at the border near Dajabon was strengthened with at least 143 military personnel.
At present, only Haitians with visas are being allowed across the border and all are being asked to wash their hands with anti-bacterial soap upon entry. The border control has traditionally allowed one-day vendors and students to enter through border checkpoints without visas.
