In a page-two editorial today, executive editor of Diario Libre Adriano Miguel Tejada speculates that President Leonel Fernandez's intense political activities nationwide is just a way of keeping party cohesion around his person. He says that re-election has been kept alive since the approval of the 2010 Constitution that bans consecutive presidential re-election. But he makes the point that in the discussions, people forget the solitude of a President who cannot be elected again. "A President who cannot be re-elected, after his second year of government, is abandoned by all, by those who quickly run to join the likely successor. Nobody pays attention to a President without an immediate future, not even his closest allies when they see their posts may be up for grabs," he writes. He says that this is why historically all Presidents have said they will run again. "What has happened and will happen is that the President is going to try to stretch his hold on power until there is a candidate for his party. Then his political worth is enhanced because he can have a strong influence on the victory or defeat of his organization," he writes. "Once again he becomes the indispensable man," he concludes.
He speculates: "Leonel Fernandez, as the acute politician that he is, is trying in these days to keep his government intact, keep his troops in line around him and faithful to his mandate. The rest can wait. You will see."
