Culture Minister Jose Rafael Lantigua and US Embassy cultural attache Katherine Cantrell attended the launch of the Mobile Cinema outreach program yesterday, as reported in El Caribe. The program, which is sponsored by Orange telecom, and has the cooperation of the Centro Franklin, the cultural promotion division of the US Embassy, is taking movies to outdoor settings nationwide. It seeks to promote movies in general and encourage the production of local films. The initiative comes under the umbrella of Santo Domingo American Capital of Culture 2010. The program kicks off on 13 November with a first screening of the movie Tropico de Sangre by producer Joan Giancinti at the Fortaleza Ozama in Santo Domingo's Colonial City. The film tells the story of the murder of the Mirabal sisters, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the tragedy. The movie will be shown again in Salcedo, the hometown of the Mirabal sisters, on 27 November.
Culture Minister Lantigua says that the program is in line with the government's efforts to promote the film industry. A law to promote cinematography was passed this year.
