What was thought to be a pre-Columbian pyramid in Puerto Plata province has turned out to be nothing but a geological rock formation. Humans had nothing to do with the unusual formation. A team of researchers from the Museum of Dominican Man led by director Christian Martinez visited Hugo Suero's property in the community of Aguaita, Maimon in the municipality of Puerto Plata. Team members included archaeologists Jorge Ulloa and Joaquin Nadal, and geologist Tabare Mundaray Baez. Pauline Kulstad represented the Caribbean Association of Archaeologists. Also attending were Thimo Pimentel and Margarita Olsen. Alfredo Coppa and Alice Angeletti, archaeologists from Universita La Sapienza in Rome were also on the team of researchers.
The conclusion, as reported in Listin Diario, is: The structures are limestone rock originating due to the shallow saline waters. Diario Libre explains that the shifting of the land fractured the rocks creating the phenomenon that was initially suspected of being a pre-Columbian formation.
