The Sunday flea market on Luperon and the Malecon in Santo Domingo is a traffic stopper, no doubt about it. The vendors benefit from their low operating costs and pass on savings to shoppers. Thousands of shoppers are attracted and vehicular traffic at the intersection comes to a standstill, making anything close to a quick pass by, all but impossible. According to El Caribe, the market, a source of employment for dozens of people, is administered and regulated by the Santo Domingo West municipality. According to an on-site investigation by the reporters, it appears that most of the sellers are Haitian. There is a lot of competition for sales, prices are very competitive, and purchasing is almost "obligatory," according to the paper. The market specializes in used clothing, and the tax-free deals make purchases more attractive.
