On Friday, the Dominican and Haitian military authorities dispersed a mob of Haitians who had violently sought to enter the city of Dajabon. After the announcement that the market day would be suspended, the Haitians desperately sought to cross the bridge leading across the border. They were demanding the reopening of the Monday & Friday market days that were suspended last Monday in order to prevent the entry of cholera to the Dominican Republic. Dominican military personnel increased border controls to impede the mobilization of Haitians.
As part of the preventive efforts, Public Health employees have visited around 5,000 homes in Dajabon, one of the main border crossing points, to explain the preventive measures.
Migration Director General Sigfrido Pared Perez said that an estimated 200,000 Haitians had crossed the border and stayed illegally after the 12 January earthquake. He estimated that about 57,000 of them had crossed with legal permits. He estimated that there are 1.3 million Haitians living in the DR and that most are illegal aliens. He said Migration controls would not be restored to their normal levels until the cholera alert was called off, according to recommendations from international health organizations, as reported in Listin Diario.
