While Haiti braces for what could be a catastrophic event, according to some forecasters, the Dominican Republic is preparing for Tropical Storm Tomas. The storm could hit the country during the early hours of Tuesday, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) director General Juan Manuel Mendez reported yesterday. The COE has issued a green alert from San Cristobal to Pedernales.
Local press reported that the COE director says that the emergency rescue services are on permanent alert. High tides, dangerous waves, strong winds and intense rain are expected. Mendez assured that everything was ready to carry out evacuations in case it is necessary.
Meanwhile, Luis Cuevas from the Dams and Reservoirs Committee said that the four dams in the south are at the right levels to receive the rains that have been falling since yesterday.
On the other hand, the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) reported that if the storm continues on its current path, the center of the storm would pass 395 kilometers to the south/southeast of Santo Domingo this evening. Tomorrow, Tuesday, it will be situated some 280 kilometers to the south of the extreme southern tip of the Barahona peninsula. For up to the minute reports and updates, follow us on:
