The Dominican Winter Baseball Tournament continued over the weekend with the Toros from La Romana maintaining their impressive string of victories. On Friday night the Toros defeated the somewhat hapless Aguilas Cibaenas 2-0. In San Pedro de Macoris, the resurgent Estrellas Orientales defeated the Tigres del Licey with a score of 8-2. In Santo Domingo, the reigning champions, the Leones del Escogido defeated the Gigantes del Cibao 4-3, in a game that saw 40-something Jamie Moyer, a veteran left-hander make a one inning debut.
On Saturday, the Leones del Escogido defeated the Aguilas Cibaenas, 5-1. This was the fifth loss in a row for the one-time high-flying Aguilas. Over in La Romana, the Tigres de Licey defeated the Toros del Este, 7-1 behind excellent, six-inning pitching from Cesar Valdez and home runs by Yamaico Navarro and Carlos Peguero. The Estrellas were defeating the Gigantes 7-6 when the skies opened up and the game was halted in the bottom of the ninth inning. According to the new Winter League rules, the game will be finished in the Julian Javier Stadium on 2 November with Alexi Castillo on second and one out.
On Sunday, the Aguilas Cibaenas finally won a game, defeating the Gigantes del Cibao in San Francisco de Macoris. With the game almost over and the hometown fans counting the last few outs, a two-run homer by Daniel Murphy tied the game and in the tenth inning, Eric Patterson produced a three run-blast that gave the Aguilas only their second victory of the season. The Toros kept up their winning streak against the Estrellas, 4-1, and stayed in first place in the tourney. Starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy only gave up four hits during five innings. This was the third win in a row over the Estrellas, with two of the wins coming in the Estrellas home field. The reigning champions, the Leones del Escogido, defeated their cross-town rivals, the Tigres del Licey by a score of 4-1. The "Reds" now lead the City Tourney 2-1. Licey suffered from a lack of batting, as its first four hitters went 0 for 15 at-bats.
