The man who embarked on a trek from Dajabon to Santo Domingo with a 30-pound cross - a distance of 305 kilometers - on August 4th, is expected to reach the Presidential Palace in Santo Domingo at 2 this afternoon. 39-year old Angel Sosa is protesting and demanding that the government fulfill the promises it made for his province and the country's northeastern region. Among his demands is the reconstruction of the Loma de Cabrera to Dajabon highway. As reported in Clave Digital, Luis Manuel Bonetti, the administrative secretary of the Presidency, said that all the works that Sosa is demanding will be completed in "coming months." Responding to the comment, Sosa said, "First I have to see to believe." He said that the governments always make promises, hoping that the people will forget their demands.
Yesterday, he reached Pedro Brand, 28 kilometers away from his final destination. Last Thursday, he had to be hospitalized in La Vega with dehydration and lung problems, but was ready to continue soon after receiving medical attention at Centro Medico Padre Fantino. Clave Digital reports that in every community he has passed through, Sosa has received the support and solidarity of men and women who sympathize with his peaceful protest.
Sosa claims to be an admirer of US African-American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and founding father of modern India Mahatma Gandhi. Initially his protest was related to his losing his job in government, but it subsequently evolved on to greater issues.
