50% increase in alcohol consumption

Over the last ten years, the consumption of alcoholic beverages has increased by over 50% due to the lack of policies, according to Dr. Maria Esther Monteiro, sectional adviser for the Pan-American Health Organization. Hoy newspaper reports that Monteiro attributes the main cause of death in the DR to traffic accidents while driving under the influence of alcohol. She attributes the increase in alcohol consumption, mainly beer, to the absence of regulation of the drinks industry, which is allowed unrestricted access to the market with overwhelming advertising and sponsorship of a wide range of cultural and sports events.
This month, the government instated new rules and regulations that have curtailed the traffic accidents due to driving under the influence of alcohol.
