The Armed Forces and the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) have redoubled their surveillance and controls in towns and all the coastal areas of the country's eastern region, where most cases of drug smuggling into the country, by air and sea, have taken place over the last few months. Diario Libre reports that Armed Forces Minister Sigfrido Pared Perez said that additional controls have been introduced in the most "permeable" parts of the border, and that drug trafficking in the area has decreased as a result. However, smugglers are now using the eastern region instead, which led to the decision to increase surveillance. The Listin Diario reports on a small airplane that was scheduled to make a landing at a military airfield in Los Llanos, San Pedro de Macoris. It was detected by radar systems in Miami and Puerto Rico, which are collaborating with the Dominican authorities. Four men were arrested as they awaited the arrival of the plane that never took off due to mechanical problems, according to Buenaventura Bueno Torres, spokesman for the DNCD.
