If anyone believed that the practice of toll-paying to security officers in the border area had stopped as part of the measures aimed at reducing migration in response to the cholera outbreak Haiti, they have been proven wrong by a recent traffic accident. A truck packed with illegal Haitian migrants suffered an accident in Villa Vasquez in Montecristi, on the northwest entry to the Cibao. Some 50 Haitians were injured, 23 seriously, and were taken to the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez public hospital in Santiago.
El Caribe reports that the 87 people on board the truck had come from the city of Jacmel, making their way to Santo Domingo and La Romana. They were traveling in a Mitsubishi truck, license plate L223697 being driven by a Dominican, Alberto Pena Rodriguez who fled the scene. His assistant Idilio de los Santos was seriously injured.
El Caribe reports that the truck driver had been tried for people smuggling in the past.
