Tropical Storm Tomas is expected to swerve to the north into Haiti once it crosses far to the south coast of the Dominican Republic. It is expected to exit the island of Hispaniola near the province of Montecristi in the north. Tomas is being described as a potentially dangerous and unpredictable storm that needs to be monitored constantly. Effects of the storm in the form of high surf and torrential rains are forecast as of Tuesday, especially in the southwest and the northwest. Tomas is passing about 600kms south of the DR.
Emergency Operations Center director Major General Juan Manuel Mendez says there is a green alert from San Cristobal to Pedernales on the southwest, due to the risk of urban and rural flooding and landslides. The alert also covers La Altagracia to Pedernales because of high surf.
He warned against use of beaches in the southeast coast because of abnormal waves.
