At a congressional committee meeting yesterday, both the CASC and the CTU trade union federation representatives said that they supported the use of pension funds for the construction of low-cost housing, because it would benefit workers, create jobs and support the country's development. According to Hoy newspaper, Gabriel del Rio from the CASC and Eugenio Perez Cepeda from the CTU told the committee that the project that will create a mortgage market was a good idea. The committee chairman, Jose Maria Sosa Vasquez has convened all the political parties in order to hear their opinions on the somewhat controversial issue of using the money in some of the pension funds for the construction of low-cost housing for workers and mid-level employees. The union leaders said that the minimum salary for entering into the program should be reduced from RD$25,000 to just RD$20,000 in order to provide more workers with affordable housing.
