The Minister of Public Health is calling on the security agencies in charge of guarding the frontier to take greater responsibility in response to the risk posed to the country by the illegal entry of Haitians, at a time when the cholera outbreak affecting Haiti constitutes a threat for the Dominican Republic. Yesterday's request by Bautista Rojas Gomez was made in response to the recent case of Haitians who were injured in a traffic accident while being transported illegally hidden in the back of a truck.
The official referred to the issue during a meeting held with the mayors of Greater Santo Domingo, who joined together formally in a cholera prevention strategy that is being implemented by the ministry. With this meeting the logistical process of the prevention campaign in the Dominican territory comes to a close. Pan-American Health Organization representative Lilian Reneau praised the positive actions taken by the Ministry of Public Health since the 20 October alert on cholera was issued.
