Following an accident involving a truck that was transporting 87 illegal Haitian migrants, the role of the specialized military border security corps, Cesfront is again being questioned. Cesfront is in charge of monitoring traffic along checkpoints from the border inland, and is suspected of accepting tolls in return for allowing the passage of vehicles with illegal immigrants.
Hoy reports that the Chamber of Deputies permanent commission for border affairs said that the Cuerpo Especializado de Seguridad Fronteriza (Cesfront) is a corrupt entity and after its creation the traffic of illegal migrants from Haiti to the DR has increased, according to Rafael Mendez, commission spokesman and deputy for Barahona. Deputy Jose Antonio Diaz Reyes called for a purge of the institution.
Cesfront director Major General Cesar Castaing Jimenez said that the entity carries out a praiseworthy task in the control of goods and people.
