Many Dominicans won their elections in the US yesterday. The most prominent victory was that of Angel Taveras, who won his bid for Mayor of Providence, RI. This makes Taveras the third Dominican American elected as mayor in US history (behind Alex Blanco of Passaic, New Jersey and William Lantigua of Lawrence, Massachusetts). However, Taveras becomes the first Latino mayor in Providence history and the first Dominican American to become mayor of a major US city (Providence has 172,000 residence).
In New York, Adriano Espaillat won his first election to the New York State Senate representing the Washington Heights/Northern Manhattan section of New York City. Espaillat was the first Dominican ever elected to a state legislature in US history when he was elected in 1996 to the New York State Assembly. Guillermo Linares won his first election to the New York State Assembly. This returns Linares to elective office for the first time since becoming the first Dominican American ever elected to public office in US history in 1991 as a New York City Councilman where he served until he was term-limited in 2001. Linares won the open NY State Assembly seat that was held by Espaillat for 14 years before Espaillat ran for the open seat in NY State Senate. For the first time ever, Washington Heights will have three Dominicans holding the three elected positions for the district (the third position being New York City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez who won his seat in 2009). Washington Heights is considered the center of the Dominican community in the US.
Two Dominicans won their first full term elections after winning special elections earlier this year for open seats. Jose Peralta of Queens, NY won his first full term to the New York State Senate after winning a special election last March. Marcos Devers of Lawrence, MA won his first full term to the Massachusetts House of Representatives after winning a special election in April to the seat that was vacated by William Lantigua after he won his election as Mayor of Lawrence, MA in 2009.
Davian Sanchez made history when he won his election for Providence, RI City Council for the 11th ward district. At just 21 years of age, this makes Sanchez the youngest elected official in Providence history and the youngest Dominican American ever elected to any public office in US history.
Other newly-elected Dominicans include Leo Medina (elected as a Rhode Island State Representative), Sabina Matos (elected as a Providence, RI City Councilwoman) and Helen Voutsinas of Merrick, Long Island, NY (Nassau County District Court Judge). Among the incumbents who won re-elections include: Juan Pichardo of Providence, RI (Rhode Island State Senate), Nelson Castro of The Bronx, NY (New York State Assembly), Grace Diaz of Providence, RI (Rhode Island State Representative), Joseline Pena-Melnyk of College Park, MD (Maryland State House of Commons), Miguel Luna of Providence, RI (Providence City Council), and Nilda Morales-Horowitz of New Rochelle, NY (Westchester County Family Court Judge).
