The National Office of Intellectual Rights (Onapi) has awarded the Federation of Coffee Growers of the South (Fedecares) the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. Their coffee is cultivated in the Valdesia region, which spans San Cristobal, Peravia (Bani) and Ocoa provinces. The coffee is known for its large grains, low acidity, a sweet, fruity taste and balanced character, according to Onapi. The coffee will be known as Cafe de Valdesia.
Fedecares was formed in the aftermath of Hurricane David in 1979, when coffee growers in the southern region united to recover from the destruction of that year's harvest. Over the years the federation has received technical support and marketing advice from international organizations like Oxfam GB and Intermon Oxfam (Spain).
