Rafael Camilo, the director general of the Customs Department (DGA), says that customs collections are up by 20% this year. As of 30 October, the DGA has collected RD$8.5 billion more than last year. Camilo said he was expecting record collections this year, adding that the Dominican economy is growing as evidenced by the import of raw materials and capital goods flowing through customs. He said that raw material imports are up 49% and capital goods 38%. "That gives an idea of the new dynamics the economy is experiencing, compared to last year," he stated, as reported in Listin Diario. He made his comments during a Dominican Republic Association of Industries event held yesterday to present a new Industrial Code of Ethics.
