After several daily newspapers reported on the extreme neglect and deterioration of the areas under the overpasses at the Av. Duarte & Paris intersection, National District Mayor Roberto Salcedo's municipal council has decided to act, as reported in El Dia. The solution is to build a plaza for the vendors, says city government secretary Domingo Contreras. The city government will take out a loan from the governmental Banco de Reservas to build the plaza.
He made the announcement at a press conference after describing the confiscation of improvised stoves, dozens of gas tanks, shacks and old tables that were being used by the vendors. The decision was made in the context of the cholera risk in Haiti, as well as a general preventive measure to improve hygiene in food handling.
The city government says it is finalizing a ruling aimed at controlling street sales.
