Tomas intensified and is passing through the Windward Passage between Cuba and Haiti as a category 1 hurricane. Tomas, as a hurricane, killed some 12 people in St. Lucia in the southeastern Caribbean over one week ago. The storm is likely to cause large-scale destruction in Haiti, where an estimated 1.3 million people live in tent-cities following the devastating January 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. The slow-moving storm has curved in a rare direction this week, and is affecting the entire western coast of Haiti in direction of the Turks & Caicos to the north.
People in Haiti have been advised to evacuate the highest risk zones. The Haitian government announced that people living in tent cities would have to leave. Port-au-Prince mayor Jean Ives Jason said that the authorities had located 41 provisional shelters for those who would have to leave the 42 most vulnerable zones of the city. At a press conference held yesterday Haitian Interior Minister Paul-Antoine Bien-Aime announced that one person had been killed when trying to cross a flooded river in a vehicle.
