Work has begun on the demolition of the 27 de Febrero Naval Base in Sans Souci. The Navy installations are being moved to a new site in Los Tanquecitos in Boca Chica. The 450,000-square meter area is on State Sugar Council land. Chief of the Navy, Vice Admiral Luis Homero Lajara Sola said that the new naval base, which will cover an area of 90,000 square meters, would include a residential area for officers and navy personnel, with 48 apartments in six buildings, and other facilities such as a 200-bed Navy hospital, commercial area and naval school.
The property where the naval base was located was sold to Inversiones Turisticas Sans Souci for the construction of hotels, real estate, shopping areas, a convention center and a marina. The Naval Academy will be built on a 73,000-square meter lot next to the commander offices at the Port of Andres in Boca Chica.
The Navy Chief said that the Naval Base and Naval Academy would move to Boca Chica, but that the Navy headquarters would be set up in a five-floor building with underground parking where a branch of the Banco de Reservas is located, by the current navy base.
