The Dominican Alliance Against Corruption (Adocco) has appealed to President Leonel Fernandez, asking him to order a review of the assets of the government's many officials, including city mayors. They say that this is essential because of what they describe as "the irritating exhibition of enormously expensive properties all over the country" by these officials. According to El Nuevo Diario, these riches are in marked contrast to the poverty levels of the vast majority of the Dominican population at a time when the country has not been able to meet the Millennium Development Goals.
Adocco coordinator Julio Cesar de la Rosa Tiburcio said that the President should create a commission to determine the origin of the assets exhibited by these officials that are not in their sworn statements of assets registered at the National Directorate of Persecution of Administrative Corruption.
