A death toll of eight and some US$18 million in damage has been attributed to the passing of Hurricane Tomas in Haiti. However, the main news out of the country is the fact that they are reporting over 500 deaths from cholera and more than 7,000 cases so far. These numbers are a major increase over the 330 fatalities reported just last weekend.
Meanwhile, El Nuevo Diario says preventive measures have been increased in the Dominican Republic, according to Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez. The Minister said that they have taken the epidemiological controls to the limit, and that they are on a full-time watch for cases of leptospirosis in order to prevent an outbreak as a result of the flooding from the rains left by Tomas. He reiterated that there has still not been one reported case of cholera in the Dominican Republic. The minister was speaking to reporters during an outreach program in La Barquita, one of several riverside barrios in Santo Domingo that was flooded in the heavy rains. The ministry set up an aid station where they conducted exams and handed out preventive medicines.
