The number of people displaced by the effects of Hurricane Tomas in the DR climbed to 13,230 yesterday and evacuations continued as many rivers and streams broke their banks, affecting some 2,646 houses. The good news is that no deaths have been reported, according to Diario Libre. It is expected that Tomas, that was located yesterday some 770 kilometers to the southwest of Bermuda, will continue causing rains of between 1" and 1?", and for this reason the authorities are maintaining the RED Alert in 20 provinces and 9 provinces under yellow and 3 under green alerts. The Emergency Operations Center (COE) was carrying out air evacuations yesterday in Banica, in the western province of Elias Pina, and in the northwestern province of Dajabon, where the Masacre River on the border with Haiti burst its banks.
COE director Juan Manuel Mendez Garcia described the flooding in Banica as "historic". The waters affected swathes of farmland, engulfing poultry sheds and cutting off part of the population. A total of 76 communities are currently isolated because of overflowing rivers and streams in several provinces, including 44 in the province of Azua, as a result of the flooding of the Yaque del Sur, the Cueva and the Gregorio rivers.
