President Leonel Fernandez has chaired a meeting with security chiefs assembled for the Democratic Security Council to hear proposals for new measures to enhance security, the Presidency reported. Again, the issue of police officers serving as private security guards came up and once more the President ordered them to be sent back to the force assigned to street patrols. The Council announced that a force of 14,000 police agents would be sent to improve patrols. The Presidency also reported that instructions to recruit 2,000 new agents were issued.
In the style of the Fernandez administration, a National Encounter for Democratic Security meeting was called to discuss the issue in more detail. The idea is for neighborhood groups and civil society representatives to join security services in working on the preparation of a Strategic Security Plan. El Dia reports that a date has not been set for the meeting, which is aimed at gathering recommendations to strengthen the government's Safe Barrio Program.
Interior & Police Minister Franklin Almeyda Rancier, Armed Forces Minister Major General Joaquin Virgilio Perez Feliz, General Prosecutor Radhames Jimenez, Police Chief Major General Armando Polanco Gomez, National Drug Control Department chief Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, National Drugs Council president Mabel Felix, the director of the National Department of Investigations General Antonio Aquino Garcia and presidential drug advisor Marino Vinicio Castillo were all at the meeting.
