A group of 26 senators from the PLD party expressed their support for President Leonel Fernandez yesterday evening. Last night President Leonel Fernandez said that at present he is concentrating on governing well and responding to the nation's expectations and when the circumstances present themselves "(he) will make the decision that best suits the interests of democracy and the Dominican people". The President gave this answer to 26 PLD senators who delivered a letter in which they express their full support for him and his government and showed their willingness to share the same fate as him in the future, leaving the decision on his immediate political future in Fernandez's hands. According to Diario Libre, Fernandez said: "And I am sure that upon taking this decision that will be in accord with the aspirations, desires and will of the Dominican people, I will also be acting in the best interests of the PLD".
The President said that the PLD would, at the right time, and in a democratic and sovereign manner, decide on its future with regard to the presidential elections in 2012. In the letter delivered to the President, which was read by Espaillat senator Jose Rafael Vargas during a ceremony in the Ambassadors Hall of the Presidential Palace, the senators said that "Since they have experienced the different stages that the country has gone through, they are "duty-bound to defend and preserve leadership like yours, which represents a genuine guarantee for the support of the values and the ideals for change within Dominican society". They state that Fernandez "has managed to take the party to victory on four occasions, he has guaranteed a government that is progressive, with complete freedom, stability and growth and he deserves to have the opportunity to decide which course to follow".
