The Democratic Christian Union Party (UCD) is calling for the modernization of the teaching system in the Dominican Republic, the abolition of the National Tests, the improvement of the school breakfast program and the recognition of the human and intellectual value of the school system left by early 20th century Puerto Rican intellectual and educator Eugenio Maria de Hostos, who introduced advanced education methods to the Dominican Republic.
Party president Luis Acosta Moreta (Luis "El Gallo") said that many of the current problems affecting children are the result of serious flaws in the educational system. In an article in Hoy, Acosta Moreta called for a detailed evaluation of the current system in order to bring them up to twenty-first century standards.
