The outspoken campaigner for the descendants of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic, Sonia Pierre, has reiterated her belief that thousands of children are subject to discrimination in schools and other educational institutions in the country. El Caribe newspaper says that Pierre is claiming that hundreds of students could not take the National Examinations because of a lack of proper documentation. She added that "Hundreds of Dominican students of Haitian descent are not able to obtain their university degrees after having finished their studies..." She added that even some baseball prospects have not been able to secure contracts due to a lack of documentation. Although no official figures are available, most Dominican authorities place the number of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic at around one million. They work mostly in construction and in the sugar fields. The Dominican Constitution does not grant citizenship to children born in the DR to parents who are "in transit" or who are in the country illegally.
