The Dominican Winter Baseball League saw an amazing thing this morning: The Estrellas Orientales in first place. This is something that has not happened in decades. Last night the Estrellas visited the city of Santiago, where they played the Aguilas Cibaenas, a team that used to be considered the odds-on favorite as champion. When the Estrellas left the city, they were sitting in first place, a full game ahead of the Toros del Este as they defeated the Aguilas 6-2 behind the outstanding pitching of Evan MacLane. MacLane obtained his third victory of the season.
In La Romana, the Leones del Escogido defeated the Toros del Este, and ended their stay at first place in the standings. Diario Libre says that "great pitching" was what gave the Leones their victory number nine of the season. Nerio Rodriguez pitched six innings of one-hit and no earned runs and helped Escogido to a 2-1 victory.
In Santo Domingo, Josh Riddick, who has had a poor performance until now, hit a three RBI triple that helped the Gigantes del Cibao defeat the Tigres del Licey 8-5. The victory ended a three-game losing streak for the Gigantes and gave the Tigres their seventh loss in eight games so far this season.
