At 9:10am yesterday, the new Senate was installed with Reinaldo Pared Perez (PLD-National District) as president, Cristina Lizardo as vice president, and Diego Aquino and Amarilis Santana Cedano as secretaries. Spokesmen for the party blocks are Francis Vargas (PLD), Cesar Diaz Filpo (PRD) and Sterling Vasquez (PRSC). Pared said that the Senate will draw up an agenda of priorities with important projects and treaties currently in the chamber that are vital for the economic, political and social development of the country, as is the case of the Constitutional reform.
Likewise, Julio Cesar Valentin (PLD-National District) was installed as president of the Chamber of Deputies, Lucia Medina Sanchez is vice president and Teodoro Ursino Reyes and Cleo Sanchez are secretaries.
Wednesday, 16th August marked the start of a new legislature -- 2006-2010. The ruling PLD now has the majority in Congress, with 22 of 32 senatorial seats, and 96 of 178 deputy seats.
This is the first time in his two administrations that President Leonel Fernandez has a Congressional majority. Nevertheless, during his first two years of government, the PRD-majority Congress rarely acted as opposition and was mostly complacent with projects sent from the Executive Branch, including the recent approvals of the controversial artificial island, the EUR106 million commercial bank loan for metro, the new Enade collections agency and the US$119 million commercial bank financing for police equipment purchases.
151 city mayors and 963 city councillors were also sworn in for the 2006-2010 term yesterday.
