Merengue band leader Sergio Vargas was sworn in as deputy for the province of San Cristobal. He represents his hometown, Villa Altagracia, and decided to go into politics to continue working for his community. He surprised everyone by attending with a ponytail, considering that his normal afro hairstyle was not appropriate for a Congressman. Vargas grew the afro in protest at the government's neglect of his community, but then liked the look and the afro stayed.
Another well-known figure who is now a Congressman is Raul Mondesi (PLD-San Cristobal), the former Major League baseball player.
Former Technical Minister of the Presidency during the Hipolito Mejia government, Rafael Calderon, was also sworn in as PRD Deputy for Azua. He was notorious for his support of multi-million commercial bank loans for purchases endorsed by foreign government export agencies.
Ditto, former director of Migration during the Mejia administration Miguel Vasquez Escoto is now a deputy. He achieved notoriety when the US Embassy confirmed that his tourist visa had been revoked.
Amable Aristy Castro was also sworn in as Senator for the province of La Altagracia. The US Embassy announced that his B1/B2 tourist visa for travel to the US had been revoked just days earlier.
